Types of Growing Threats Macs Face and How to Deal with Them

Traditionally, Macs are considered more stable than other types of computers because they’re less prone to hardware crashes, software incompatibility issues, and malware attacks, thanks to a tightly controlled manufacturing process and excellent after-sales support from Apple. However, threats against Macs are rising quickly.

Malware Attacks

Malware is any malicious software, such as a virus or a worm. Recent cybersecurity reports suggest that malware threats against Macs are now outpacing Windows.

Your first line of defense against malware is to download virus protection for Mac from a cybersecurity company like Malwarebytes that’s light yet powerful and works in perfect harmony with your system’s default security software. There are some specific types of malware that Mac users should watch out for:

  • Ransomware is a type of malware that quickly breaches your Mac’s security and locks your files, folder, or entire system until you pay a bounty to hackers through an untraceable digital medium. New ransomware strains, such as ThiefQuest, are sending alarm bells through the Apple community. To protect your computer from ransomware, watch out for phishing attacks on email and social media messages, and only download software from trusted platforms.
  • Adware is a kind of malware that invades your privacy by sending your browsing data to marketers and other third parties. While adware isn’t usually dangerous, it’s quite annoying. It can hit your browser with a barrage of pop-ups, hijack your browser, install plug-ins without your permission, redirect your browser to other websites, slow your Mac, and crash programs. To avoid an adware infection, never click on pop-up ads, and don’t visit shady websites.
  • Spyware is a more dangerous type of adware that sneaks into your system and sends your sensitive information to hackers. Cybercriminals use spyware to steal your money, take over your social media accounts, or blackmail you. To keep spyware away from your Mac, tighten your security and privacy settings, use a strong password, and avoid downloading programs from suspicious sources.

Compromised Apps

Never download apps from third-party platforms or torrent sites because they can compromise your system. Set your Mac to only download programs directly from Apple. Even then, stay vigilant. Unfortunately, many infected apps have made their way to Apple’s official platform. These malicious apps use the Trojan horse delivery system to mislead you about their real intent to damage your Mac or steal your data.

Always do a background check when downloading apps, even from trusted platforms, and think twice about giving permissions. For example, if your child’s nursery rhymes app wants to access your camera, then hit the uninstall button.

Physical Threats

Thieves love to steal MacBooks because they’re usually kept in pristine condition by their proud owners and are valuable. To stay safe, keep a low profile, and always keep your MacBook in your eyesight. You can also invest in a laptop locking station that keeps your computer secure.

Remember to activate the Find My Mac feature in your system settings even if you take the best security measures. Find My Mac will help you find your stolen or lost Mac and wipe data remotely if needed. While Macs face a growing number of threats, you can keep your computer safe with cutting-edge cybersecurity software and a vigilant mindset.
