Python Remove Newline From String

In this tutorial we will show you the solution of python remove newline from string, strings can be defined as a collection of Unicode characters that are contained within single or double quotes.

We can say that strings are an array of bytes that represent Unicode characters.

There are times when we need to remove the newline from a string while processing some massive data. So let us start.

Step By Step Guide On Python Remove Newline From String :-

Just like all other programming languages, Python also supports strings.

Strings start with either a single quotation mark or a double quotation mark.

Strings end with either a single quotation mark or a double quotation mark.

Python also supports multiline strings in a program.

In a Python program, there are 3 ways in which we can remove newline characters from a string.

# Using re.sub() function to remove new line characters
import re
original_str = ['He\nllo', 'the\nre.', 'H\now', 'ar\ne', 'you\n']
print("The original string : " + str(original_str))
res = []
for sub in original_str:
    res.append(re.sub('\n', '', sub))
print("String after removing newline character : " + str(res))

# Using strip() function to remove new line characters
string1 = "\n Hello there. How are you \n"
newstr1 = string1.strip()
print(newstr1)
string2 = "\n Hello there. How are you \n"
newstr2 = string2.rstrip()
print(newstr2)

# Using the replace() function to remove new line characters
original_str2 = ["Hello\n", "there. How \nare", "you\n\n "]
rez = []
for x in original_str2:
    rez.append(x.replace("\n", ""))
print("New string : " + str(rez))
  1. The first line is a comment saying that “Using re.sub() function to remove new line characters”, which is the first method to remove newline characters from a string.
  2. The next line is an import statement saying “import re”, which is mandatory to include at the top of a Python program.
  3. The next statement is an array of strings named “original_str”, which contains some strings with newline characters in between.
  4. The next line in the program is a print statement saying “The original string”, which will display the array of strings as it was initialized.
  5. Any value specified in the argument is converted into a valid string by the str() function.
  6. The next line declares an array in which the resultant string will be stored.
  7. In the next line, there is a for loop to iterate through the array of strings to find and remove newline characters from strings.
  8. Res.append() will append the content or strings to the end of the res array. The re.sub() function is used to take a substring and replace it with another substring.
  9. The next line is again a print statement saying “String after removing newline character”, which will display the array of strings without newline characters.
  10. The next line is a comment saying “Using strip() function to remove new line characters”, which will be ignored by the compiler.
  11. In the next line there is a string variable which has a value of “\n Hello there. How are you \n” assigned to it.
  12. Use of the strip() function is the second method you can use to remove newline characters from a string. The strip() function removes newline characters from the start and end of a string.
  13. You can also use the rstrip() function, but it will only remove the newline character at the end of the string.
  14. Then the next line is a print statement which will display the string without newline characters.
  15. The next line is a comment saying that “Using the replace() function to remove new line characters”, which is the 3rd method.
  16. The next 2 lines contain 2 arrays: one is original_str, containing a list of strings, and the second is the array in which the resultant string will be stored.
  17. The next line is a for loop which will iterate through the array of strings. The replace() function searches for newline characters as a string within a string and replaces them manually from each string using the for loop.
  18. The next line is a print statement, which will print strings without newline characters.

Conclusion : -

So, at last, here in the conclusion, we can say that with the help of this article you are able to remove the newline characters from any string in any Python program.

You can use any of the methods from above and it will work fine.

I hope this tutorial on python remove newline from string helps you and the steps and method mentioned above are easy to follow and implement.
